Utility

Throughout the world, a staggering number of older office buildings are so lacking in terms of facilities that they have become unmarketable for sale and rental. These buildings, primarily built in the 70's and 80's, were constructed while energy costs were still low. Architects were able to design buildings without the constrains and challenges that come with sustainability. Light materials were often used, along with and steel and glass in abundance. Today's potential buyers and renters are looking for more comfort with minimal energy consumption. Costs for traditional renovations are high and demolition is often impossible and more expensive than applying Phase Change Materials in the renovation process. Phase Change Materials can also be used to drastically reduce energy costs. Thanks to Phase Change Materials, renovation or construction costs per m2 also go down. This results in a reviving interest in older building amongst many discerning renters. Phase Change Materials can also provide significant comfort and energy-saving contributions for the healthcare sector. This includes retirement homes, hospitals and nursing homes where high temperatures often lead to issues in the summer. Also school buildings often have poor or even no climate systems and years of overdue maintenance. Maintenance which will require millions of euro's in the coming years to restore these buildings to an acceptable (climate) technical level.
